Practicum placements in schools are an integral component of a teacher education program and are based on the cooperation between King’s Faculty of Education and various school jurisdictions. All courses with a practicum component in the B.Ed. program (EDUC 251, EDUC 351, 353, and EDUC 451, 453) are completed under the supervision of certificated classroom mentor teachers and King’s faculty supervisors. Practicum students are placed with mentor teachers in Public, Separate, and Independent schools in Alberta school districts, primarily in the Edmonton area.
EDUC 251 (Introduction to Teaching) is a pre-B.Ed course that introduces the life of the professional teacher and lays the foundation to future courses in the teacher education program. In addition to the campus-based course work, students spend 10 half days in the classroom.
Information about the specific requirements can be found in the EDUC 251 Practicum Manual
EDUC 351 (Elementary Introductory Practicum) provides students in the Elementary B.Ed. (After Degree) program with a reflective practicum experience that includes five weeks of in-school practical experience in an elementary classroom and a one week campus-based seminar.
Information about the specific requirements can be found in the EDUC 351 Practicum Manual.
EDUC 353 (Secondary Introductory Practicum) provides students in the Secondary B.Ed. (After Degree) program with a reflective practicum experience that includes six weeks of in-school practical experience in a junior high or secondary classroom and an integrated campus-based seminar.
EDUC 451 (Elementary Major Practicum) is the major practicum in the Elementary B.Ed. (After Degree) program. Twelve weeks are spent in an elementary classroom and one week in a concluding seminar. The student is assigned to a certificated teacher and is required to do a substantial amount of teaching on a graduated scale culminating in at least four weeks at the full-time level.
EDUC 453 (Secondary Major Practicum) is the major practicum in the Secondary B.Ed. (After Degree) program. Twelve weeks are spent in a junior or senior high classroom and one week in a concluding seminar. The student is assigned to a certificated teacher and is required to do a substantial amount of teaching on a graduated scale culminating in at least four weeks at the full-time level.
During the practicum a supportive learning community is maintained through web-based discussion groups. The e-learning management program, Moodle, provides the platform for this enhanced communication between practicum students and Faculty Supervisors.
